Intellectual Debate Clubs “Zhastar” and “Brain Storm”

Debate is an intellectual game structured around clearly defined rules and represents a special form of discussion. It develops critical and logical thinking, communication skills, public speaking, and fosters leadership qualities among students.

Today, debates are held in schools and universities around the world and have become one of the most popular youth activities in Kazakhstan.

The essence of debate is to convince a neutral third party (the judges) that your arguments are stronger than your opponent’s. While the concept is simple, the strategies and methods involved can be complex.

At the republican level, the most widely used formats are: American Parliamentary, British Parliamentary, and Lincoln-Douglas.

At our university, the debate clubs “ZhasTar” and “Brain Storm” were established in 2009 and 2012 under the guidance of Vice-Rector K.S. Batholdin. Today, they have over 100 active members. Each year, the clubs organize the republican intellectual tournament “ATU CUP” for the Rector’s Cup of ATU, academician T.K. Kulazhanov, as well as internal and interfaculty tournaments and various events.

Club Objectives:

  • Promote civic engagement among students;
  • Teach public speaking and structured discussion;
  • Train students in diplomatic conflict resolution;
  • Develop skills in defending one’s point of view;
  • Generate ideas for youth policy and national programs.
